Invergarry to Fort William...

In dire need of a pub meal by this point....I'd been in Scotland almost 2 whole days and hadn't even set foot in a pub yet! So I figured Fort William would be a good place to get some real pub food and a pint of Ale.

While I waited for my friend to respond to my text  (we were meeting up in Fort William - his local stomping grounds), I decided to explore town and get the locals to point me in the direction of a good watering hole. I explored the High Street which really isn't that big, and discovered that the West Highland Way ends in Fort William. Would be a pretty cool thing to do one day. I think most people take about a week to complete it.

After talking to some locals to find a good spot to get some food, I made my way towards the Grog and Gruel - old-school pub, right on the main walk through town. Quite busy when I arrived, friendly staff and some real ales available. I grabbed a pint of Nessie's Monster Mash and some fish and chips.

There's a lot more English people up in Scotland than I assumed there would be. Even one of the Hostel owners is from the North of England.  Everyone's super friendly - from bus drivers, shop owners, people in coffee shops and random people on the street. It's great travelling alone, but after only a day and a half I found myself longing for a travel buddy. So I found myself seeking out random pubs for food, drink and a welcoming atmosphere to just hang out in. I can see why they all flock to the pubs. If you're not into the outdoors, then there's not really that much to do out there in the middle of the countryside. It's damn cold and wet - even in May. Warm, cozy pubs with all your friends and a drink or two to take the edge off - it's a wonder everyone up there isn't drunk ALL the time!

Good pubs. That's what I love about it here. Fort William.
