A last-minute decision meant I was to spend the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge, of all places. Sunrise at 4:45 am meant that at 10 pm the previous night, we had plenty of time to make it to the site, park, grab a couple of hours sleep in the back of the van and make the 20-minute walk from the car park in a nearby field, over to the stones and hang out with 18,000 of our closest friends. Free parking and free entry along with unrestricted access to the stones meant that a great range of people would be enjoying the earliest sun rise of the year together. The vibe was energetic and mellow all at the same time, people just being friendly to each other and sharing a laugh while music of different sorts came from all around and within the stones. Drum circles, people with horns, flutes, guitars and other musical devices kept the crowds entertained until the sun started to rise behind some thick cloud cover. No sun rise to see, but a gradual lightening of the sky sent the crowd into cheers and hollers. I managed to shimmy my way under and through some of the stones, into the centre of Stonehenge and take in the atmosphere. Pretty cool day to be alive.

Well-lit, luxury toilets.
Slumber-party.
